For a hedge-trimming enquiry, the most useful details are its approximate height and length, which faces need trimming, and how easily those areas can be reached. A short hedge beside clear paving is a different job from one behind a narrow bed or above a sloping path, even if both are the same length.
You do not need exact measurements to make contact. Sensible estimates and optional photographs can start the discussion. Photos can support an indicative estimate. More complex jobs need an onsite assessment, and the final scope and price are agreed before work starts.
Describe the hedge you have
Give the current height, length and approximate width where possible. If it changes height along a driveway or wraps around a corner, mention that rather than treating it as one uniform section. Say whether it is regularly maintained or has become dense and overgrown. The standard hedge pricing guide assumes a width of 1 m. Wider or thicker growth needs an assessment for extra work and cost.
The plant type is useful if you know it, but do not guess. A close photograph of the foliage may help alongside a wider view. Keep your feet on safe ground; climbing a ladder to obtain a measurement or photo is unnecessary for an initial enquiry.
Explain the finish you want
“A light tidy to the existing shape” is different from “reduce the height substantially”. Explain the desired finished height and whether you want the top, one face or both faces trimmed. Point out gaps or areas where privacy matters so these can be discussed before cutting.
Not every hedge tolerates the same degree of reduction. Existing bare sections or uneven growth may remain visible after trimming. The agreed approach needs to suit the plant and its condition; a photograph cannot guarantee a dense, level result straight away.
Access can change the scope
- Is there clear working space on each side of the hedge?
- Are there steps, a slope, soft ground or a narrow gate?
- Are fences, windows, parked vehicles or fragile plants close by?
- Are wires or other overhead obstacles present?
- Does any requested work need access outside your property?
- Will pets be securely separated from the work area?
Do not assume access through a neighbour's property is available. Identify the issue and confirm arrangements before the visit. Clear photos of suitable small-tree work may support an indicative quote, while complicated jobs need an onsite assessment. Large or hazardous tree work may require a specialist. Vegetation touching or close to powerlines must be handled by authorised powerline pruning contractors; contact your electricity distributor for advice. Plan for the volume of cuttings
A small change along a long hedge can produce a substantial amount of material. Tell our team whether a suitable green bin is available and how much space it has. Off-site green-waste removal costs extra and should be included in the discussion, rather than assumed from the word “cleanup”.
